GAME OVERVIEW

A small touchscreen game where you have to constantly repel incoming bitblock enemies using color beams and lasers.

FEATURES

  • Fast paced color coded gameplay
  • Use multiple power ups to aid you in your fight against the constantly approaching bitblocks
  • Endearing 80's vhs visuals

I'm the lone developer of this game.

Background

I wanted to create a game with a simple concept that would also be difficult and complicated. So I sketched multiple concepts in book and came up with this one. Two or more objects rotating continuously in 360 while slowly approaching you. The player would be able to shoot beams at the objects to repel them and whenever you missed, the objects rotated faster and faster until the approached and destroyed you

analysis

Playing the game was pretty easy at first  so in order to make it more difficult I added the concept of switching colors at random. After adding the color changing, I wanted more variety to the game so I added powerups. There are 5 in total. Some of the power ups include, freezing time, expanding the bitblocks, shooting two bullets, increasing the repel of bullets and just repelling the blocks farther.

Adding the power ups balance the game a bit more but I still wanted more variety and depth to the game so I decided to add two more features. Boss fights, traps and trip scenes. The boss fights are simple randomized using both keyframe animations I created and randomized transform values in a script.

There are over 19 boss fights with randomized names. The boss fights ensured that game would have an ending as if you defeat all 19, you end the level and go to another level with three bitblocks this time. The total number of bitblock enemies are 6 right now.

The trip scenes are camera image effects that make it more difficult to hit the bitblocks. This was an effect purchased from the unity asset store. There are over 25 trip scene in the game and they appear at random.

The 80's VHS fonts and effects where created in Photoshop. I created some of the particle effects using Unity's particle system and Photoshop for images. Some of the other effects where purchased from the unity asset store.

The game will be released on the Apple app store and Google play store soon.
